Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Caterpillar Band?

The Caterpillar Band is a fun and entertaining musical experience for young children. The Caterpillar Band is an innovative way to bring music into the lives of children. The band aims to promote teamwork and sharing in a fun and musical setting.

My child is 5 years old, are they too old for the Caterpillar Band?

Unfortunately yes, the program is geared towards children ages 0-4 years.

I have two children, 8 months and 3 years. Will they have to attend separate sessions?

No, we feel that our younger band members love to imitate the older children. The older children also love to help out the younger band members. A range of ages in each session also provides a variety of skills! From the youngest egg shaker expert to oldest triangle soloist!

Are there any Caterpillar Band performances?

Yes! Performances take place at the end of each ten-week session. The Caterpillar Band performance is an integral part of the program. The Caterpillar Band concert is open to all band members. Each concert features two or three songs and even some dancing! The concerts are held on a Saturday, and each band member receives two invitations to distribute to family or friends. This allows our band members to include working parents and those who wouldn't normally get to attend a session during the work week.

We have a large family. Can we request additional invitations?

Of course! Just let us know.

How long does each session last?

Each session consists of ten classes; each class is an hour in duration. The last fifteen minutes of each class consists of free play with our musical toys. This gives caregivers a chance to chat and socialize. Caterpillar Band also provides a small snack at the end of each class.

I'm thinking about signing my child up for the winter session. Do you have a snow cancellation policy?

Yes! We don't want Caterpillar Band members out in dangerous weather conditions. If Lexington and Bedford Public Schools are closed for a snow emergency, then we will cancel our classes for that day. Any closure notices will be posted on the News page. In the event of a cancellation, we will extend the session to compensate for the snow days.

My child can't sit still for more than ten seconds. Will that be a problem?

Not at all! We try our best to engage everyone with a variety of songs, games and activities. If your child is extra fussy and doesn't want to participate in a certain activity, he/she is welcome to play with one of our balls or dance ribbons. We try to tailor our classes to the age of our audience. Each class usually includes at least one energetic activity aimed at our toddler band members. We also include a more mellow low key activity for the tiny tots!

Could we have a Caterpillar Band at our child's birthday party?

Yes! Please see our Parties page.

Can I feed my baby in a class?

Of course!

Do you provide a CD or songbook?

No, we feel that the average home has sufficient music resources to interest the young child. We do offer a list of suggested listening materials on our website.

What if my child is sick and can't attend a class?

It is in the best interests of the band that your child abstains from class if he or she is sick. If your child misses a class due to illness, we simply extend your session to make up for the missed class. We are very flexible with vacations and doctors appointments; just let us know in advance. A Caterpillar Band roll call occurs at the start of each class.

Is the Caterpillar Band a franchise?

No, we are independently owned and operated.
